Following the Cavemen

It's funny how things come together. I've been a professional photographer on the side since I was in college. From newspaper photojournalist to corporate event photographer I have taken every opportunity to be behind the camera. So it was I found my way onto the American Fork High School basketball court.

Date night for me and my wife comes down to high school events. My daughter is a cheerleader and we made a vow to attend all of our children's events and performances. That's us, the over supportive parents. You can pick us and our kind out by looking for the kids rolling their eyes and mumbling "Can't I get away from them for even a night?". Now watch the crowd. Look for the dad rolling his eyes and mumbling "Can't we be alone for even a night?". BINGO! you've got a match.

My daughter has friends on the basketball team and as much as I try to not like them, or any other potential suitor, the fact is these are some real stand up guys. So on Friday night there I was with my lavish date night Taco Bell meal watching my daughter cheer and enjoying the game being played by guys I was trying to not like. Then one day I found myself behind the wheel of brand new digital camera.

Now the idea of taking pictures at the game was not new to me. However, film and processing can get expensive - especially when you have no real reason for taking the pictures but a desire to be behind the camera. But the digital world opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

Game night was my first chance to take this camera out for a spin. "I'll be down on the court honey. I just want to take her out for a spin. You know, open her up and see what she can do." And so it began. Every game found me on the floor taking the camera through the paces then checking the display to see what I got. I focused on my daughter's friends and let her rip. I forgot about trying to not like the boys and found myself shouting in my head "Drive to the basket! Drive to the basket!" as I held the shutter button to the floor while the camera fired off 3.5 frames per second. As the team ran to the opposite side of the court I would quickly check my display like a child opening a Christmas present to see what I got. The gratification was instant and I wanted to run up to the bleachers and show my wife my shots. Then the boys would be charging down the court again and I was shouting "drive! drive!" while I opened up the camera and heard the click, click, click ringing in my ears like the roar of big block engine coming off the line. Baby I loved date night!

After the game I would spend hours in photoshop running by eyes over and polishing up the pictures like a man admiring his 1967 Mustang after a night out cruising and racing. But I needed others to see my work because it felt like putting my trophy in a box up in the attic. So I sent a picture off here and there to parents and boys and lived to hear them respond.

So Home Team Photography was born. The focus is now on the whole team instead of a couple of guys I'm still trying to not like. And what about those Lady Cavemen? Let's immortalize them in print on their journey to a state championship.
